Support Our Troops SpeechI am honored to be here today to pay tribute as we gather to show our support for our men and women in uniform. Today the world continues in its tumultuous state, as a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the U.S., I can speak for the more than 2.6 million men and women of our organization and its Ladies Auxiliary in stating how proud we are of those who serve in our armed forces today; their service courage and sacrifices and their service is no less than those soldiers, sailors, airman and Marines that went before them. As veterans of foreign wars, we are intimately aware of the consequences and sacrifices of war. Given the uncertainty of war and what it brings, we as an organization do not advocate war. We do, however, understand evil does exist in the world as evidenced by the terrorist attacks on the United States and its interests through the years. That is why the United States must act in its own best interest. It is fitting that we recognize those on active service and in the Guard and Reserves--men and women who continue to serve in America's armed forces today around the world--men and women who are standing watch on foreign soil, bringing food and medical supplies to people in distress, serving as peacekeepers in strife-torn areas around the world, or fighting in the war against terrorism. The Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States as an organization supports our government efforts to combat terrorism and deal with terrorists and those rogue governments that support them. The president and Congress are working earnestly to deal with the clear and present danger that confronts us. The President has demonstrated great leadership in the war against terrorism and has provided ample evidence of a grave threat from the Iraqi regime that threatens American security and the people and nations of that region. The VFW supports our military leaders and our troops as they endeavor to preserve and protect our way of life. They can be assured that resources of VFW programs, specifically the Military Assistance Program in which our VFW Posts adopt-a-unit and Operation Uplink, the VFW and its Auxiliaries free phone calling cards to our troops are in place to assist them. We have fully mobilized our support programs to let our troops know we are behind them and to demonstrate our commitment to them. To our listening audience, I urge you to pause a moment and reflect upon the freedoms that we have today and think about the service and sacrifice of those--the men and women of our armed forces--who for over 200 years have provided our nation with the security so we can build upon those freedoms. It is because of their selfless devotion to duty, their sacrifices and their courage that we are able to live in freedom. God bless our military forces and God bless America!! |
